UTTARA PHALGUNI or PANGUNI UTTIRAM
Uttara Phanguni usually falls in the month of March - April of English Calendar. Uttara Phanguni is the last month of the year as per Tamil calendar, which starts with thew month Chithirai and end with Panguni. The specialty of Uttara Phalguni or Panguni Uthiram is the coming together of the full moon day and the Uttara Nakshatra thereby setting phase for the various fervent celebrations. Panguni Uthiram has a very special importance for the Hindus. The chief highlight of the day is the celebrations that happen in the Lord Murugan, or Shanmukha or Subramanya or Aiyappa temples
Importance of Panguni Uthiram, most interestingly several celestial weddings or divine marriages of Gods is said to have taken place on the day of Panguni Uthiram. Notably, the Puranas talk about the marriages of Shiva and Parvati, Murugan and Devayani, Aandal and Ranganatha, and Rama and Seetha took place on this holy day. There are also other important happenings ascribed to this day including the incarnation of Lord Ayyappa and the incarnation of Goddess Maha Lakshmi. Therefore this day has a great significance.
The events at Murugan Temples, on this day of Panguni Uthiram, thousands of devotees throng at the six famed temples of Murugan in Tamil Nadu called as AaruPadai Veedu. There are elaborate events organized in these temples. Devotees walk over several miles on foot as a mark of their devotion to Lord Murugan with many of them seen carrying milk pots and a set up called Kavadi on their shoulders and heads carrying some objects to be offered at the temple. The most important festival on this day is the car festival at the hill of Palani dedicated to Murugan enshrined in the name Palaniyandi / Pazaniyandi or Pazani Murugan.
To note other events in temples are, as per the information presented by the Brahmanda Purana, that all the holy waters of the Universe mix with the Thumburu Theertha or Thumburu Holy water, at the holy water tank in the Tirumala Tirupati hills. In this tank, Gods are given bath on this day. Also people take a holy dip in this tank on this day to wash-off all their sins.
